Discussion Papers

The Justice Reform Initiative has produced a series of discussion papers which outline a number of policy and reform approaches to reducing incarceration around Australia.

These papers are now available for review and endorsement by organisations in Australia.

The discussion papers can be reviewed on our website or downloaded at the bottom of this page.

The discussion papers are focused on seven key reform areas. These include; policing, bail, courts, drug policy, post-release, youth justice, and adult imprisonment. You can download them below:

We note the extensive bodies of work that exist in relation to each of these areas and the diversity of opinion about the best ways to bring about change. The discussion papers aim to both synthesise existing data, research, and analysis, and build on this work to establish clear, evidence-based policy positions.

We are now inviting organisations to:

  1. Review the discussion papers and provide feedback about any critical information that you consider to be missing, and/or any content in the papers that would make it difficult for your organisation to publicly endorse the discussion paper.
  2. Provide endorsement of one or more discussion papers at the organisational level.

An online form has been created for you to undertake these activities. It can be accessed via the button below.

The Justice Reform Initiative is committed to a policy vision that is supported by the expertise of our peers. We are very grateful for your time in reviewing these documents and for your support of this process. If you have any questions about the discussion papers please contact: [email protected].

The review and endorsement process will be open until 5pm on 30 August 2024.
